DUI/DWI offenders in Trinidad are sometimes given the chance to take advantage of a drug treatment center instead of penalties for their drug or alcohol related offenses. The consequences for such offenses can often be very extreme, including jail time and serious fines and various significant costs to pay for being in the court system for and/or found guilty of DUI/DWI. More often than not, especially for first time offenders, the criminal justice system may decide that treating the issues of alcohol and drug addiction in drug or alcohol rehab is a better decision in the long term for effectively addressing the issue. For DUI/DWI offenders in Trinidad that are lucky enough to be allowed to take part in this rehab process instead of other more severe penalties, a great number will remain out of the criminal justice system for good.
