Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much higher rates of substance abuse and drug addiction than other races, an a situation which should be addressed for these cultures to endure. While the reasons may vary from person to person, many of the causes for the high rates of substance abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives are cultural ones. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the country. The most apparent obstacles to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug addiction are cultural challenges and language.
