Native Americans and Alaska Natives are known to have much higher rates of drug abuse and drug addiction than other ethnicities, an an issue which should be aknowledged for these people to endure. While the reasons may vary from person to person, most of the reasons for the significantly higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives related to their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native youth appear to have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the U.S.. The most apparent barriers to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for substance abuse are cultural ones and language. This is why it is crucial that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Mackinac Island receive rehab treatment in a drug treatment program that is culturally acceptable, and more importantly in a drug rehab program that understand the need to provide drug and alcohol rehab in their native tongue.
