Although the things which trigger substance abuse may vary from person to individual, the majority of of the factors for the higher rates of substance abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives related to their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native youth have some of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the nation. The most obvious obstacles to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug addiction are cultural ones and language.
