Native Americans and Alaska Natives have much increased rates of alcohol and drug abuse and drug addiction than other races, an an issue which must be addressed for these cultures to survive. While the things which trigger substance abuse may vary from person to person, most of the reasons for the significantly higher rates of alcohol and drug abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture.
