Native Americans and Alaska Natives have significantly higher rates of abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other ethnicities, an a circumstance which must be aknowledged for these people to survive. While the things which trigger substance abuse may differ from individual to individual, the majority of of the factors for the high rates of alcohol and drug abuse amongst Native American and Alaska Natives have to do with their culture. In fact, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the country. The most apparent barriers to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug addiction are cultural ones and their language. This is why it is crucial that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Girdwood obtain rehab treatment in a drug and alcohol treatment facility that is culturally acceptable, but more importantly in a drug rehab program that considers the need to offer alcohol and drug rehab in their native tongue.
