Native Americans and Alaska Natives have considerably very high rates of substance abuse and drug addiction than other races, an a circumstance which has to be resolved for these people to survive. Although the causes may vary from person to individual, most of the reasons for the high rates of abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives related to their culture. First of all, Native American and Alaska Native youth have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the country. The most apparent barriers to helping Native Americans and Alaska Natives for drug and alcohol addiction are cultural challenges and language. Due to this it is important that Native Americans and Alaska Natives in Alliance receive substance abuse treatment in an alcohol and drug rehabilitation program that is understanding of their culture, and more importantly in a drug rehab that takes into the account the need to offer drug and alcohol rehabilitation in their language.
